Liverpool have yet to switch into fourth gear in the summer transfer window and face a race against time as Andoni Iraola looks to build a competent squad prior to the start of the Premier League campaign.
Paris Saint-Germain and the Reds are in discussions over a swoop for Bradley Barcola while Ibrahim Mbaye also remains firmly on the club’s radar. While offensive additions are key, the team needs better quality and depth in defence too.
Simon Phillips has reported that Liverpool are now considering a transfer for Chelsea right back Malo Gusto, who has been looking to leave the Blues and has interest from Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
Earlier in the summer, the Blues had slapped Gusto with a £75 million price tag in a bid to avert suitors away from the Frenchman but are now believed to be ready for negotiations, as per the journalist.
A key signing for Liverpool
Conor Bradley is recovering from a serious injury he suffered in January this year and will not be back in action for at least a few more months, whereas Jeremie Frimpong’s lack of defensive contribution has left Liverpool requiring a right back.
Malo Gusto would be an excellent addition to the Reds’ squad as he has extensive Premier League experience with Chelsea, a strong physical presence, one-on-one dominance and the ability to drive forward and deliver accurate crosses into the box.
He brings high energy, technicality and pace to the table, which would hold him in good stead under Andoni Iraola. Liverpool can also offer him the opportunity to play in next season’s Champions League, but Manchester City could hold the edge over them.
Gusto and Enzo Maresca share a close relationship from their time together at Stamford Bridge, and that may be a decisive factor in the full back deciding on his next destination if he is to depart Chelsea this month.
