Jaylen Brown apparently left behind more than memories during one of his offseason trips to Hawaii.
U.S. Olympic swimmer Michael Andrew and swimmer Patrick Sammon revealed that they discovered a GoPro sitting on the bottom of the ocean while in Hawaii. When they checked the footage stored on the camera, the person appearing repeatedly in the recordings looked very familiar: Philadelphia 76ers star Jaylen Brown.
Sammon initially turned the discovery into a social-media mystery, posting that they had found the camera underwater before asking followers to help identify its owner. The footage showed Brown swimming and training in the water, eventually leading people connected to the NBA star to confirm that the camera belonged to him. Brown himself later responded to the post from his social-media account.
The unlikely discovery makes considerably more sense given Brown’s growing interest in swimming and aquatic conditioning.

Brown has incorporated work in the water into his offseason preparation for years, using swimming not simply as conditioning but as another athletic skill to improve. He has previously trained with big-wave surfer Laird Hamilton and later worked on his swimming technique with Olympic legend Dara Torres. Brown has also spent time training in the water with surfer Luca Padua, who appeared in the social-media exchange after the GoPro was found.
Brown became serious enough about improving as a swimmer that he regularly recorded his sessions in order to study his technique. That detail makes the presence of a GoPro full of Brown’s swimming footage considerably less random than it might initially sound.
Andrew, meanwhile, has strong ties to Hawaii himself. The Olympic gold medalist returned there to train with his father after spending time with Arizona State’s professional swimming group, and ocean activities have become a regular part of his life and training environment. Sammon has also trained alongside Andrew in Hawaii.
Still, the odds of two elite swimmers happening across an NBA superstar’s missing camera on the ocean floor are difficult to ignore. For Brown, what was presumably a lost piece of training equipment turned into an unusually fortunate recovery story.
