Zuffa’s expensive signings have helped establish its reputation as a destination for huge paydays. Conor Benn’s defeat and Shakur’s continued inactivity raise a harder question: what has the promotion received for its spending?

Benn looks like a costly recruitment mistake. His limitations were visible before Ryan stopped him in the second round on September 12. Beating an aging Regis Prograis offered little assurance that he could handle a leading welterweight. Zuffa backed him anyway and now faces rebuilding an expensive signing.

Shakur’s signing has delivered little so far. He has not fought since January, although he only joined Zuffa in July. The promotion cannot be blamed for his entire absence, but securing his signature has yet to produce his next appearance.

His technical ability is established. Whether his patient, defensive style can attract a much larger paying audience remains an open question. Zuffa needs opponents who make the outcome feel uncertain and give viewers a reason to watch beyond appreciating his skill.

Inactivity makes that task harder. A fighter trying to expand his audience needs regular appearances and memorable performances. Months of negotiations provide few reasons for casual viewers to stay interested. Zuffa bought an opportunity to build around Shakur; it still needs to deliver the fights.

The funding arrangement adds another consideration. TKO president Mark Shapiro previously explained that Sela covered Benn’s signing cost, with TKO contributing none of that payment. White’s recruitment benefits from a partner willing to finance expensive deals.

If those enormous purses are available to only a handful of fighters, recruitment mistakes become more costly. Benn needs rebuilding, while Shakur needs activity and compelling opposition.

Staying busy will not fix Shakur Stevenson‘s box office issues. Casual American fans demand real action, yet his cautious approach produces long stretches of defensive sparring. Fighting more often keeps his name in the news cycle, but it does nothing to pull in a broader fanbase.

That reality makes Stevenson an awkward fit for a promotional company chasing mainstream American viewers. Zuffa secured elite technical skill, yet pure boxing ability rarely moves tickets or drives pay-per-view buys on its own. The promotion must prove Stevenson can generate legitimate revenue before those massive investment checks look justified.

Fighters will judge Zuffa by the offers they receive and how often they compete. A huge check for one recruit does not guarantee similar treatment for the next. Zuffa’s reputation may attract interest, but worthwhile fights must justify the spending that created it.
