Elliot Page‘s The Odyssey role has seemingly been revealed. Now that we know who he’s playing, it makes the controversy surrounding his inclusion in the film even more ridiculous.

Page has been involved Nolan’s latest movie for some time now, but his role in the movie was shrouded in mystery. According to a listing for the movie on Into Film, Page will be playing the role of Sinon, a Greek warrior who is Odysseus’s cousin. What he does in the film is still unknown, however.

With Page’s role in the film seemingly confirmed, many have looked back on the controversy surrounding his casting. While it seemed silly even at the time, it now looks even more so given what his role ended up being.

Elliot Page’s role in The Odyssey makes the “controversy” surrounding his appearance even sillier

Over the past few months, since Page’s casting was announced, social media had been filled with accounts criticizing The Odyssey. Following the release of its official trailer in May, rumors began circulating about two specific actors:Elliot PageandLupita Nyong’o.

For Page, rumors began circulating that he would be playing the ghost of Achilles, the mythological hero of the Trojan War who is recognized as one of the greatest Greek warriors ever. As for Nyong’o, criticism about her part in the movie began after it was revealed she would be playing Helen of Troy.

Trolls across social media have largely been attacking the movie for its casting choices. While some are genuinely unhappy with historical inaccuracies, the large majority of complaints have essentially been deriding the movie as “woke,” with a large portion of criticism simply being based on the fact that Page is a trans man potentially playing the role of a major figure in Greek mythology.

However, much like it was at the time of the controversy starting, it remains silly even now. For starters, it’s important to remember that The Odyssey is a fully made-up story. The iconic story is steeped in Greek myth, and while it is an incredible one, it is steeped fully in Greek myth. Heroes like Achilles never existed, and even characters like Sinon, who Page might actually be playing, never existed. Getting upset about who would be portrayed as totally fictional characters always felt a bit much, and even more so now that more information has been gleaned.

On top of that, Page’s prowess as an actor is the only thing that should really matter when it comes to talking about a movie. Nolan is someone who is known for taking swings when it comes to how he tells a story. We don’t need to look far to see them in The Odyssey, either, as Matt Damon is set to play the lead role in the movie, and speak in no real accent or inflection despite playing a legendary Greek story character. Like most of Nolan’s movies, though, the choices usually end up being the right one for the movie, which is likely to be the case here as well with Page.

In the end, what started as some genuine upset about historical inaccuracy in the upcoming The Odyssey adaptation quickly turned into something else entirely. Like most things of this nature, the reality of the situation also ended up being completely different, and something that makes the previous outrage look even sillier in hindsight.
