This guy traveled to Texas to find out what was going on with the 1,000+ Tesla Cybertrucks that SpaceX bought.
It is an open secret that Musk’s other companies, including SpaceX, contributed significantly to the Cybertruck sales.
Still, having this visual confirmation, so to speak, gives you a better understanding of the scale of this.
But it all makes sense when you find out why SpaceX bought the trucks.
The reason why SpaceX has been buying Cybertrucks
According to reports by theLA TimesandBloombergbased on data from Kelley Blue Book,Cybertruck sales dropped48.1 percent in 2025.
Tesla sold 38,965 units in 2024, and only 20,237 in 2025.
But the situation is even more dire than that, because registration datathat they cited reveals that 1,279 Cybertrucks were bought by SpaceX, and that Musk’s other companies –xAI, Neuralink, and The Boring Company.
The Cybertruck certainly isn’t performing as Tesla hoped it would.
When it was first launched, the hype was through the roof, andseveral units ended up selling well above sticker price in the secondary market.
But then the initial excitement faded.
As for SpaceX’s Cybertrucks, a Tesla fan actually traveled to Texas to see what was going on, and what he found was interesting.
Here’s what happened to SpaceX’s Cybertrucks
Fred Jones, a visitor from Omaha, traveled to Brownsville, Texas and shared a picture of SpaceX’s Cybertrucks.
He shared a photograph in the Tesla Model Y public group on Facebook and, as you can imagine, all kinds of theories emerged.
“We saw thousands or hundreds of Tesla trucks at Boca Chica SpaceX parking lots and driving around Brownsville, TX. Also saw many cars in bank car lots but guessing they were not being returned or repossessed,” the caption read.
The truth is most of these Cybertrucks probably belong to SpaceX employees.
Employees of Elon Musk’s companies are reportedly able to lease the Cybertrucks for a highly subsidized rate – some people say it’s only $400 a month – and they also get free Supercharging as long as they charge at the base.
It doesn’t necessarily happen automatically, but employees of car companies have been given the opportunity to buy or lease a car from the very same company they work for since the dawn of time.
In this case, the company is part of the same umbrella that also includes Tesla, and so when the question is ‘would you rather lease XYZ for $1,000 or a Cybertruck for $400?’, the answer becomes quite obvious.
