An 11-year-old Pennsylvania boy is recovering after an alligator attack during a father-son fishing trip in Florida left him without his hand.
The child, identified as Brodie, and his father were on their annual fishing trip at Nelson’s Outdoor Resort in Umatilla on June 27 when the attack happened, according to his family and the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Brodie was releasing a fish he had caught when an 8-foot, 7-inch alligator suddenly surfaced, Andrew Wright, Brodie’s mom’s cousin, who is also acting as the family spokesperson, told Fox 35.
“That’s when the gator came out of nowhere and attached to his arm,” Wright said.
Brodie’s father reportedly jumped onto the alligator’s back and tried to pry open its jaws to stop the attack. Wright said the pair had checked the area for alligators and remained cautious, but the animal was hidden beneath the water and went unnoticed.

“Honestly, his dad is what saved his life. The gator wasn’t able to pull Brodie off the dock, which is a huge relief because it could have turned out much worse,” Wright said.
Brodie was rushed to the hospital, where doctors performed multiple surgeries in an attempt to save his hand, but ultimately had to amputate it at the wrist.
“He broke multiple bones in his arm as well when the gator rolled,” Wright told Fox 35.

The gator responsible for the attack was captured and killed, the FWC confirmed.
Meanwhile, Brodie, a sports fan who enjoys baseball, football and fishing, faces a long physical and emotional recovery. A GoFundMe set up to support his medical expenses and rehabilitation said donations will help him adjust to life after the attack while continuing to pursue the activities he loves.
“It’s gonna be a very, very traumatic thing for him. He’s got a long rehabilitation, not just physically but mentally,” Wright said.
The attack came during a week of two other alligator incidents in Central Florida, including a snorkeler bite at Rainbow Springs State Park and a fatal alligator attack on a woman swimming in the Econlockhatchee River.
The FWC said serious encounters are rare but urged the public to keep a safe distance, avoid feeding alligators, swim only in designated areas during daylight and keep pets leashed.
