Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is my favorite game in the franchise, so it was music to my ears when Ubisoft announced a remake. Called Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, it brings the pirate video game to modern consoles with a ton of improvements and an impressive visual facelift. It successfully retains its place as the best pirate action video game and reminds gamers of how magical the series can be at transporting players to different periods in history.

The biggest compliment I can give Black Flag Resynced is that it feels like the original game I remember. Rather than replicating the whole experience, such as some annoying trailing missions and an odd story structure, it has been improved upon and feels like the idealized version that has lived on in people’s memories. Small but meaningful tweaks to missions make them more open and enjoyable to complete, while combat has seen a significant overhaul, and the seamless cities without any loading are a massive improvement. It might not stick out as a huge difference while playing, but if you actually compare it to the original, you’ll be surprised at how many smart changes have been implemented.

Not all of the changes are hard to notice, though. The world of Black Flag has been wonderfully expanded, allowing you to dive anywhere and find new secrets. There are also brand-new islands to explore, hours of side content, and an additional chapter revolving around Robert Maynard. One of the coolest tweaks is the rifts, which are optional quests that give “what if” scenarios that offer some of the most rewarding character moments in the game. Whether it’s your first time as Edward Kenway or not, you’re getting a richer, more detailed experience.

However, what has made Black Flag special hasn’t changed at all. You truly get to feel like a pirate while playing. From exploring the sea and happening upon treasure on an island you decided to take a closer look at, to having your crew perform different sea shanties, it’s just a blast to let the game’s theme wash over you. No other action game gets the right balance of pirate life, and Resynced is still remarkable at it.

The final major change is the Animus Hub, which was introduced in Shadows but didn’t really do anything. Now that two games support it, it makes a lot more sense. It allows you to gather rewards for your game, makes the series feel more connected, and you can access new missions. It’s turning from a glorified launcher into a worthwhile addition, so I’m excited to see how Ubisoft grows it.

There are some minor disappointments in terms of it missing some content. Most notably, the excellent Freedom Cry expansion isn’t included. That means some of the best story missions and most intriguing campaigns Assassin’s Creed has ever done aren’t wonderfully remade. Additionally, the meta game developer wraparound story from the original has been cut. I’ve never been a huge fan of the modern-day element of Assassin’s Creed, so this doesn’t bother me a ton, but it did have some funny moments and jokes at corporate culture that have been axed. The game does flow better without it, though, so that’s not as much of a bummer as Freedom Cry not being included.

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Review: Final Verdict

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a fantastic open-world experience. Whether it’s your first time or you want to relive Edward’s adventure, you are in for a treat. It’s one of the best pirate video games ever made and truly embraces its theme. Truly a remake done right, it feels like the game Black Flag always wanted to be.

SCORE: 9.5/10

As ComingSoon’sreview policyexplains, a score of 9.5 equates to “Excellent.” Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its type. The gold standard that every creator aims to reach.
