Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people, owns a sizable island in Hawaii, but he still got pulled over and received a speeding ticket while he was driving his Corvette.
The irony is not lost on us.
But it’s certainly good to know that, at least on this occasion, everyone was treated equally before the law.
And, to his credit, Ellison’s reaction was also exactly what it should’ve been.
Even billionaires can get a speeding ticket
Larry Ellison, one of the world’s richest people (he briefly surpassed Elon Musk to become the world’s richest a while back), owns anislandin Hawaii.
But speeding is speeding, and the speed limit on his island is the same as everywhere else in Hawaii.
In 2022, he got pulled over on his own islandin Hawaii.
For years, police officers across the US have been using both body cameras and dashcams, which is why encounters with celebrities often end up on the internet.
Based on what we saw on camera, a police officer pulled the tech billionaire over forspeeding and failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign.
To his credit, Ellison didn’t pull the ‘I own the island’ card and simply acknowledged the mistake and said ‘there was no excuse’.
The officer treated him like any other motorist, issued a citation, and sent him on his way.

The reason why he got pulled over in the first place
You’ve probably often seen headlines along the lines of ‘Larry Ellison owns an island in Hawaii’.
That’s catchy, but slightly inaccurate.
Technically, he doesn’t own 100 percent of it, ‘only’ 98 percent.
This is because two percent of the land (and whatever’s on it, like homes, for example) still belongs to its respective owners, including private homeowners, the state, and the county.

This is the reason why the police are there.
If Ellison owned the island in its entirety, he could theoretically close it to the public and drive his Corvette as fast as it can go.
At that point, every road would effectively become his private driveway.
