This guy decided to list his 1986 Buick Century on eBay after it was revamped onPimp My Ride,but ended up getting a strict warning just three hours after it was listed.
The iconic MTV show, hosted by rapper Xzibit, aired back in the early 2000s and was a global hit.
But now, so many years later, people are beginning to understand that reality shows aren’t that real.
And this guy learned that the hard way.
This owner had two problems with his Pimp My Ride car
Pimp My Ride,hosted by rapper Xzibit, ran for six seasons and mostly relied onWest Coast Customs– a California-based workshop – to modify people’s cars.
So far, so good, but the problem was that several people who had their cars modified on the show revealed that what we saw on screen was a far cry from what actually happened behind the scenes.
Also, many revealed that these cars didn’t really get much use after being pimped.
Several previous contestants took to Reddit to divulge some details about their experiences.
One such contestant was Jake Glazier, who appeared on the show’s fourth season in 2005, when MTV pimped his 1986 Buick Century.
The main problem for Jake was that they apparently didn’t do anything to the car aside from making it look ‘cool’.
“So they made it look awesome, but ‘they don’t fix any of the mechanical issues, and my car was a piece of s***” he said.
This may have sounded shocking back then, but it’s probably not all that surprising today, considering how these shows work.
But wait until you hear what happened when he tried selling the car on eBay.
They really didn’t want him to sell his car
As reported by Jalopnik, Jake had to take down the listing immediately.
“I actually had to sign a contract that prohibited me from listing their final product on eBay, which I did,” Jake said.
“I was contacted by Viacom [MTV’s then parent company] about three hours later, ordered to take it down. I then got the contact info of the company that made the Jackhammer woof and made a deal. What they did was make my piece of s*** sound exceptionally awesome, which is great. Just not great enough to drive on roads.”
This probably had to do with liability.
Maybe they didn’t want headlines about a ‘Pimp My Ride car’ breaking down or causing an accident.
Still, there was a silver lining of sorts.
Jake said he eventually ended up selling his Buick Century to a company that worked closely with MTV for the show… for $18,000.
Not a bad deal for something he described as a ‘piece of s***’.
