A popular Nickelodeon TV show could make a comeback after years of fan demand. However, the revival is still in early talks. Hey Arnold! writer and producer Joe Purdy has confirmed that discussions with Paramount are underway. The project has not received an official greenlight yet.
During an interview with The Direct at MultiCon 2026, Purdy discussed the possibility and confirmed that conversations are happening among Paramount’s decision-makers. He said, “Absolutely. Yes, yes, yes. There is an ever-changing environment of the business and people who are making decisions. It’s the cliché story… But be sure we are (having conversations).”
The timing of those talks comes after major changes at Paramount. Skydance Media completed its acquisition of the company in August 2025. David Ellison became Chairman and CEO of Paramount Skydance following the deal.
How long was Hey Arnold! on the air for?
Hey Arnold!, created by Craig Bartlett, premiered on Nickelodeon on October 7, 1996. The animated series ended on June 8, 2004, after five seasons and 100 episodes. It followed fourth-grader Arnold Shortman and his friends in the fictional city of Hillwood.
The franchise later returned with Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie in 2017. The TV movie gave viewers the long-awaited closure that the original series had left unresolved.
A potential revival would keep the characters close to their original ages. Purdy said they would likely be only “a year or two older.” He also stressed that the characters are “so beloved” and should remain recognizable.
The creative team already has plans for possible new stories. Purdy said they have “many, many ideas and storylines” ready if Paramount moves forward. He also suggested that modern technology could become part of the updated setting.
Purdy does not expect the characters to suddenly become high school students. Instead, he said the change would be gradual rather than an abrupt shift.
Right now, the biggest hurdle remains getting the project approved. Paramount and the creative team are discussing the possibility, but no production plans have been announced.
