The White Stripes frontman Jack White has paid tribute to his older brother, Edward “Eddie” Gillis, following his death.
Gillis, who managed the vinyl pressing facility in Detroit, Michigan, for White’s label Third Man Records, died on Saturday after a “tough battle against cancer”.
In a statement posted to Instagram, White remembered his sibling as a “funny and generous person that everybody loved”.
He wrote: “The world lost a beautiful soul today. My brother Edward Gerard Gillis has passed over to heaven this morning after having fought a tough battle against cancer.
“Ed was such a caring, funny and generous person that everybody loved. He was a proud husband to Angie and the father of two beautiful children Amelia and Garrett.
“He truly would have many of us laughing and falling out of our chairs at times. He was the manager of our Third Man Pressing plant for 10 years and pressed hundreds of thousands of other artists records.”
White also highlighted his brother’s creative talents outside of record pressing, writing: “He loved making small sculptures and flowers from the vinyl scraps of the plant that people really enjoyed.
“Eddie was also an acclaimed pastry chef that ran kitchens and bake shops for the Ritz Carlton hotel and Beaumont Hospital.
“He did so much while he was on this planet.”

White, who is the youngest of 10 children, went on to reflect on Gillis’s early musical influence within the family.
White recalled: “In his youth Eddie was the guitar player in the family when we were all growing up back when I was on drums only, and he was just great at the instrument.
“I was lucky to play music together with him at times throughout our lives, once even for the Detroit Tigers while they were at spring training in Florida with our old band that included Dominic Davis on bass.
“He taught me so many wonderful and simple things over the years that I’ll never forget; how to string a guitar, how to fish on the Detroit river, how to drive a stick shift …
“He was an amazing big brother to me and I just hate to see him leave, but I’m glad he is at peace. God bless you Eddie.”
Along with The White Stripes, who were made up of White and drummer Meg White and who broke up in 2011, the guitarist is also known for music with the bands The Raconteurs, who released hits such as “Steady As She Goes” and The Dead Weather, who also feature The Kills frontwoman Alison Mosshart.
White launched his solo career in 2012 with the album Blunderbuss, and has gone on to release six studio albums, with the most recent being 2026’s Frozen Charlotte.
