This is because the duo had been struggling to conceive. The consultation ultimately resolves Cheryl’s problem, but gives Hayden the wrong idea that he’s having a baby with Rachel. Later, when Hayden comes across Matthew at a Fourth of July barbecue, he becomes convinced that it’s his child.
Ultimately, his own mother, Gertrude, reveals to Hayden that Matthew is not his son and that she had known the truth for a long time. She kept it a secret from him after seeing what he did to David and Matthew couldn’t be undone. Hayden kills his mother and kidnaps Matthew. He saw the escape as an act of protecting his presumed son from what he believes are his fake parents. While Hayden tries to kill David, he ultimately faces a brutal fate at the hands of FBI Agent Sarah Greer.
