Nearly 600 years ago in Strasbourg, Germany, an invention that revolutionized book production was created and is now widely considered the best invention of the last 1,000 years.
Humans have advanced technology throughout history with some of the most enduring inventions ever created. These include the wheel, which dates to around 3500 B.C., and the internet, both of which remain essential to everyday life. Then there’s electricity, whose discovery paved the way for countless technologies and devices we rely on today.
Around 1440, German goldsmith Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press, a device that allowed for the mass production of books by mechanically transferring ink onto paper.
Sure, books and other forms of literature had existed for thousands of years before the printing press, but they were largely copied by hand.
But the printing press changed that by making books far easier to produce, allowing knowledge and information to spread to the public on an unprecedented scale through the rapid mechanical application of ink to paper.
The printing press made its way to what is now the United States in 1639, when the first press was set up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It was used to produce some of the earliest books printed in the American colonies.
Printing Press Named the Best Invention of the Last 1,000 Years
The printing press even revolutionized learning in academic settings by making books much more affordable. And Ohio State University would agree with its importance, naming the printing press the “greatest invention of the past 1,000 years.”
Just behind the printing press on Ohio State’s rankings include antibiotics, fractional distillation of crude oil and the internal combustion engine, each of which round out the top four.
But the University also points out that without the printing press, “many of the other innovations on this list would have never existed.”
