Imagine coming across a Chevrolet C4 Corvette #001 in an American garage, having been hidden away for three decades.
Well, that is exactly what happened when the guys at WD Detailing were called in to give this incredible car a spruce-up.
This is arguably one of the most important Corvettes ever made, as it brought the sports car into the modern era after the C3 generation.
With just 277 original miles on the clock, this car was almost like new, but it still needed a very deep clean.
How did the owner manage to get the C4 Corvette?
“Behind this garage door is a piece of automotive history that we never expected to find,” said the WD Detailing team in the video.
This really was VIN #1 of the C4 Corvette, the very first production model sold.
The team even found a custom hat in the car, and it had less than 300 miles on the clock.
The car belonged to Peggy and her husband, who gave an overview of the car in the video.
“He saw the advertisement for this 01 Corvette, and called California at six in the morning,” she said.
What his wife didn’t know was that he had remorgated the house in order to buy the car.
“They needed to have the house as collateral for the car,” she added.
Sadly, Peggy’s husband passed away in October 2024.
WD Detailing got to work cleaning up the C4 Corvette
The team was determined to look after the car, and they didn’t want to ruin what was a genuine piece of automotive history.
While it was dusty, the overall condition of the car was truly superb.
It had been stored very well by Peggy’s husband over the years, and given the fact he was a big car fan, he looked after it brilliantly.
The video also showed us a glimpse of the L83 V8 engine under the hood.
Even though mice had clearly run around the car, none of the wires had been chewed up.
“That we are very thankful for,” said the team as they got to work.
It is slightly unbelievable that this car still exists in such good condition.
It is incredibly rare that the very first member of any car survives, regardless of what type it is.
Peggy got to see the detailed C4 Corvette at the end of the video
While she wanted her face blurred, Peggy was shown the car at the end of the video.
This marked the first time that she had seen the car in a very long time.
“My husband would be so happy, so happy,” she cried when she finally saw it again.
Peggy wanted to make sure that the car would be seen by a huge number of people now that it had been restored.
This must be one of the most valuable Corvettes in existence.
The fact that it has survived for all this time is a great testament to Peggy and her late husband.
