A teenager from northern China has come up with a surprising idea to help young trees survive in dry regions. He built a simple device that collects moisture from the air and turns it into water. At just 14 years old, Jia Mingxuan developed a system that works without electricity, pumps, or large water tanks, using only natural condensation.

The invention was created in 2024, in Chifeng, an area that has been dealing with desertification for decades. While China has made major efforts to restore damaged landscapes, keeping newly planted trees alive remains one of the biggest challenges, especially during the first months after planting.

The project has attracted attention because it focuses on a simple problem with a practical solution. Instead of relying on complicated technology, Jia looked at a natural process that happens every day: water vapor in the air becoming liquid when it meets a colder surface.

A Simple Idea Inspired By Everyday Life

Jia Mingxuan’s device is based on air condensation. The system uses partially buried steel tubes, with the upper part exposed to the outside environment. The difference between the temperature underground and the temperature of the surrounding air helps create condensation inside the tubes.

According to Click Petróleo e Gás, the water produced inside the tubes then moves directly toward the roots of seedlings, reducing water loss and providing moisture where young trees need it most. The design also includes a cover that allows air to continue circulating through the system.

The teenager focused his work on the early stage of tree growth because this period is often the most difficult for newly planted vegetation. Without enough water, many seedlings fail before they can develop strong roots.Building the prototype required many tests in real conditions. The report explains that Jia repeatedly walked around 30 kilometers while improving the design, checking humidity levels, and making adjustments to the device.

A New Tool For A Region Fighting Desertification

The device was developed in Chifeng, a region in northern China where desertification has changed the landscape over many years. As explained by the environmental records mentioned in the source, the area received around 380 millimeters of rainfall per year in the 1960s, which was not enough to prevent soil degradation and the spread of dunes.

China has since launched major restoration programs, including the Great Green Wall, an initiative started in the 1970s and considered by Chinese government data to be the largest reforestation project in the world. Official figures from 2023 showed that forest coverage in the region had risen above 40%. However, protecting young trees remains difficult because they still need regular access to water during their first stages of development.

The source also said that other projects, including combinations of reforestation and photovoltaic panels for sand control, have been introduced to fight desertification. But even with these efforts, seedling survival remains a key issue. Jia’s system aims to address this specific challenge. Instead of only planting more trees, the idea is to help more existing seedlings survive by providing water in places where traditional irrigation systems are difficult to use.

Young Inventor Creates An Idea For A Greener Future

Jia Mingxuan’s invention received awards and local recognition in 2024. As reported by the same source material, specialists working on desertification control began following the project because of its simple design and environmental purpose.

The teenager later continued improving the prototype with researchers in Shanghai. The work included testing different materials, such as bioplastics and lightweight alloys, while exploring ways to make the device more practical.

The project has also attracted attention outside China. According to the source, experts involved in desertification programs have looked at whether similar systems could be adapted for other dry regions, including the African Sahel and parts of southern Europe.
