This man decided to take his Lamborghini Countach QV for a final drive before some big bills were headed his way.
The thing is, this car collector has been postponing some long-overdue work on his Lamborghini Countach QV.
The official ‘excuse’ was that he didn’t want to stop driving the car.
But the real reason had a dollar sign next to it, and a lot of zeros.
This magazine editor became a serious car collector
The man behind the Harry’s Garage YouTube channel – and also Lamborghini Countach QV owner – is Harry Metcalfe, former editor and founder of Evo magazine.
Thanks to Evo magazine, Harry did something no one else could probably do again today.
YouTubers certainly have the opportunity to make enough money to build a valuable car collection, as long as they are good at creating content and managing their finances.
But editors of traditional print magazines usually don’t have that same opportunity.
As for Harry, he timed it just right and made a lot of smart decisions at exactly the right time.
He started creating automotive content back when very few people were doing it, founded Evo magazine, and then sold it for a significant payout.
Couple that with his farming business and the fact that he was very early (including on YouTube as his channel is over 10 years old), and this explains his incredible collection.
Timing is everything.
So many of the cars he owns would be unattainable today, but they were sort of affordable (relatively speaking) 10 or 20 years ago.
For example, his 1987 Countach QV is worth around $600,000-$700,000, but it ‘only’ cost $100,000 back then.
It was still a lot of many, of course, but imagine doing that over and over with different supercars.
Through the years, he’s bought a lot of cars before selling them on for a profit.
His Lamborghini Countach has turned into a constant headache
Metcalfe bought this 1987 Lamborghini Countach QV in 2010, and he’s put around 24,000 miles (40,000 km) under its tires.
That’s not bad for a car with no ABS, no power steering, poor rear visibility, and a harsh ride.
The Countach was recently lent to Evo magazine for an 80s supercar feature, and it came back with a few issues.
It wasn’t Evo’s fault – it’s just that this car has proved to be a constant headache.
The list of issues is long.
Among other things, there was a problem with the throttle linkage, the door sills were corroded, a minor roof dent, and also a problem with the gearbox.
And the roof dent wasn’t the only cosmetic problem.
Most of the body panels were cracked or blemished, and there was also moisture damage.
Metcalfe took the car for his ‘final drive’ because he knew it would take months to fix all the mechanical problems and cosmetic faults.
It would also take a lot of cash.
Interestingly, while Metcalfe did mention the fact that the bills would be substantial, he didn’t mention an actual figure.
Probably because he’s fully aware that it is going to be much, much higher than expected.
